Ostara's Hare
This little "mountain hare" bears the name of "Ostara", the ancient Germanic festival of spring in honor of the Goddess "Eostre" representing youth, purity, fertility and new beginnings. Hares were sacred to her and have unsurprisingly been incorporated into the folklore of today's Easter traditions. For it is the hare and not the rabbit, which hides behind the traditional "Easter Bunny". A symbol of fertility, transformation, immortality, good luck and healing, the hare was associated with the moon and the cyclic power of death and re-incarnation. Hares sleep outdoors in "forms" which look remarkably like lapwings' nests. In the spring, when these nests are filled with eggs, it seems as if the hares have made them magically appear, hence the gifts of the Sacred Hare, alias Easter Bunny. This candle is hand-painted and will burn for over 20 hours.
